Position Summary

The Assistant Director of Student Experience plays a vital role within the Student Affairs Division by fostering student engagement, cultural awareness, and leadership development. This position serves as the institutional liaison for the Tennessee Consortium for International Studies (TnCIS), supports student government and leadership initiatives, coordinates cultural programming, and oversees major campus events such as Tiger World Fest. The Assistant Director works collaboratively across campus to enhance the student experience, ensuring that programs align with the institution’s commitment to Holistic Student Support, Teaching Excellence, Program Innovation, Fiscal Stewardship, and Organizational Culture and Inclusive Practices.

Key Responsibilities

Holistic Student Support

  • Serve as the primary advisor for the Student Government Association (SGA), providing mentorship and leadership development opportunities for student leaders.
  • Act as the institutional liaison for TnCIS, coordinating study abroad opportunities, assisting students and faculty with applications, and promoting global learning experiences.
  • Partner with faculty and staff to recruit and support students participating in study abroad programs, ensuring inclusivity and accessibility.
  • Work with members of the campus and the community to develop engaging programming that enhances student learning and fosters a sense of belonging.
  • Support students in navigating leadership and engagement opportunities to promote personal growth and career readiness.

Teaching Excellence

  • Collaborate with faculty to integrate cultural programming and leadership opportunities into the student experience, reinforcing learning outside of the classroom.
  • Provide workshops and resources that promote student leadership development, civic engagement, and cultural competence.
  • Assist in the development of reflection and assessment tools for study abroad programs, ensuring students gain academic and personal growth from international experiences.

Program Innovation

  • Coordinate the annual Tiger World Fest, a signature event celebrating global cultures and diversity, ensuring engaging and inclusive student participation.
  • Develop and implement new initiatives that promote global awareness, civic engagement, and leadership among students.
  • Identify and implement best practices in student governance, leadership development, and cultural programming.
  • Leverage technology and digital engagement strategies to expand student participation in leadership and cultural programs.

Fiscal Stewardship

  • Manage budgets for student leadership initiatives, study abroad recruitment, and cultural programming, ensuring responsible use of institutional and external funding.
  • Seek out grants and sponsorships to enhance funding opportunities for study abroad and programming.
  • Oversee the SGA budget and financial processes, providing guidance to student leaders on fiscal responsibility and governance.
  • Work with institutional partners to identify cost-effective ways to expand student access to leadership and international education opportunities.

Organizational Culture and Inclusive Practices

  • Foster a culture of belonging and inclusion, ensuring that all students feel empowered to engage in leadership and cultural experiences.
  • Develop initiatives that promote cross-cultural learning, civic engagement, and leadership development for students.
  • Collaborate with campus partners to support first-generation students in accessing study abroad and leadership opportunities.
  • Serve as a visible and engaged advocate for student voice and representation across campus.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field such as Education, Leadership, or International Studies.
  • At least two years of experience in student leadership development, cultural programming, study abroad coordination, or related areas.
  • Strong understanding of student development theory, leadership education, and civic engagement.
  • Excellent event planning, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments and with external partners.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education, International Education, or a related field.
  • Experience advising student government or student leadership organizations.
  • Background in international education or study abroad recruitment.
  • Knowledge of budget management, grant writing, or fundraising for student programs.
  • Familiarity with TnCIS programs and study abroad opportunities in Tennessee.

Work Environment & Schedule

This is an on-campus position that requires flexibility in scheduling, including occasional evenings and weekends to support student programs, events, and travel. Some domestic and international travel may be required for study abroad coordination.

Salary Range: $43,037 - $53,797

  • Pay will be determined based on experience and education in accordance with the salary guidelines of the Tennessee Board of Regents. To ensure consideration, all relevant work experience must be included in the application.*
